A group of five- and six-year-old children touched a string instrument for the first time in a real sense, beginning their musical journey. First Lesson Drawing the bow across the strings for the first time, taking the first step In class, Professor Tian Yuan began by teaching the most basic bow hold—how to grip the bow with small hands, how to relax the fingers on the strings, and how to steady the instrument on the shoulder. Most children rented their instruments from Violin Temple, while a few had their own at home; the fractional sizes were all chosen appropriately. Though the instruments were small, for five- and six-year-olds, bow control stability, finger accuracy on the strings, and coordination between left and right hands—each was a brand-new challenge starting from zero. Some children struggled to hold the bow steady, others pressed the left-hand fingers off-center, and a few simply laughed at the "strange sounds" they produced. But it was precisely these clumsy yet earnest attempts that formed the most genuine first step of their musical journey. Challenge Teaching five- and six-year-olds—even the professor says "it’s not easy" Even for Professor Tian Yuan, a teacher with decades of experience, instructing children of this age is no small challenge. Professor Tian Yuan is a member of the Chinese Musicians Association, a composer and conductor, former head of the Music Department at Beihua University, professor and graduate supervisor, proficient in cello, violin, and piano. The B-Level beginner orchestra faces a group of completely zero-basics preschoolers—short attention spans, limited comprehension, requiring immense patience and repeated demonstrations. "With children this age, you can’t reason with them—you have to make it playful. Hide the fundamentals in games, make it fun, and then they’ll learn." Throughout the lesson, Professor Tian Yuan moved constantly among the children—demonstrating every movement thoroughly, then walking to each child to correct and guide individually. Zero-basics children cannot learn by "watching once"; they must be taught hand over hand. The physical toll of this teaching method is considerable, but only in this way can each child’s foundation avoid being flawed from the start. · · · Significance Hard, but worth it Zero-basics initiation is never an easy task.
